I have downloaded the 'p4p_v8_IDCS3_PDF_export.joboptions' and placed this in my Acrobat Professional v7.0 folder, and added this job option file to Distiller.
However, I do not know where I should place the file 'p4p_v8_CS3_flattener.flst.'
There doesn't seem to be anything with a similar suffix in the InDesign CS3 folder, but presumably it should be placed within the InDesign folder somewhere?.
Thanks

Peter
The 'p4p_v8_IDCS3_PDF_export.joboptions' file, contains the settings for exporting directly from InDesign, not for creating a PDF file from Distiller. To install it, in InDesign CS3, go to File > Adobe PDF Presets > Define, click the Load button and browse to wherever you saved it. It will then be copied into the application.
Similarly with the 'p4p_v8_CS3_flattener.flst' file, in InDesign CS3, go to Edit > Transparrency Flattener Presets... > Load, to install.

Hi
You used to have a test page on this website that could be sent to printers to check PDF X-1a compliance. the test sheet tested overprinting etc... I can't find it. is it still about? can I get a copy?

Hi Sam
The Ghent Workgroup http://www.gwg.org/siteen/index.php provide a series of test elements to check Rips compatibility to process various PDF/X files.
Under "test suites" you can download both an overprint verification checker and the Ghent output suite which you can use to check
PDF/X-1a compliance of your systems. All the test elements are free to download.

| Question |
Hi there
I've used the Pass4Press guidelines for the past 3 years or so and you'll be happy to hear that none of the printers or publishers I've dealt with (and there have been many) have experienced any problems with the PDF files created.
However, we are now getting into Quark XPress 7.02 and are having difficulties producing PDF's as successful as before.
Have you put together any guidelines as yet for Quark 7 that may help?

| Question |
I am after more information regarding DP10 Proofing. Can you help, or recommend anyone for proofing in this way?
regards Wayne Gilbert. |
| Replies |
Hi Wayne
DP 10 refers to a particular type of proof produced from a Du Pont Digital Cromalin machine, it aims towards the “high end glossy magazine end of the market”.
Do not get confused by someone saying it’s a “Cromalin proof” the Du Pont Cromalin proofer is capable of producing (as are a number of other machines) a range of proofs , on a number of different stocks to a number of different standards). DP10 refers to a proof produced to a specific target on a specific substrate.
As "Cromalin DP 10" was an accepted form of proof by Printers, Publishers and Agency’s it formed the basis for the initial Proof4press accreditation process.
The Proof4press accreditation aim was produce a standard proof result regardless of the proofing engine being used, the chosen “target” result was a DP10 proof.
There are ten devices which have been accredited as producing proofs which “match” a DP10 result.
The Proof4press accreditation process has now been suspended.
To quote from the website:
"After much discussion, we have decided to officially suspend the accreditation process until we have a holistic approach to the process, backed up by a complete
set of ISO-derived separation profiles.
Thankfully we will shortly be able to announce a new set of recommendations to gaining accreditation, produced in tandem with ISO-affiliated groups (such as TC130 and the WebOffset working group) and following internationally-recognized processes. We are working hard with these groups to produce an interim profile which addresses the needs of the UK glossy magazine sector, whilst looking to promote a new suite of profiles in the longer term”
“For the time being, we can continue to recommend solutions which have already gained proof4press accreditation, as their devices have demonstrated the ability to output consistent, accurate proofs to a specific profile, even though the specific target profile will in effect change”.
(visithttp://www.pass4press.com/cgi-bin/wms.pl/419) for the full explanation).
There is a move within the industry towards ISO print standards and the use of ECI (European Color Initiative) ( http://www.eci.org/eci/en/) profiles and the use of the FOGRA (http://www.fogra.org/) media wedge as a control.
Again to quote from the web site the “new” Proof4press will be based on
“At the 2005 Production Conference, PPA's pass4press version 7 and pic4press version 2 brochures recommended using the FOGRA 27L and 28L characterisation data in line with the ISO 12647-2 printing standard. Attention was drawn to the ECI-produced profiles derived from these: ISO Coated and ISO Web Coated, covering whiter and yellower paper respectively. It was recommended to use these profiles in conjunction with the relevant FOGRA media wedges for measurement and verification purposes”
Without knowing your needs, all one can say is that it may be prudent to talk to your printer to see what type of proof is considered appropriate for the paper/ink/press combination your are going to be printing on. As you will appreciate the proof needs to represent the printing condition and you need to be sure the proof you are going to produce can do this.

| Where do you put the joboption file in Indesign CS |
| Question |
I would like to ask the same questions as Peter Sellers from Cloud nine:-
Just upgraded to Quark 7.02 and first thing I did was look on this site for a pdf export option. Was glad to see the Pass4press V6 Quark Express 7 (print PostScript) joboptions.
Once donloaded I noticed the file name 'p4p_v6_QX6' for the job options... the QX6 part is a bit confusing? should this not be QX7?
Anyway, Do you have any information on this please.. like where to install it in Quark 7, what the job options are set to and how to use it to output successful 'print savvy' pdf's?
Many thanks for your invaluable service.

| I have just been to a colour management seminar and been advised to download the Europe ISO coated FOGRA27 profile . I have searched the web and cannot find where to download this from. Can you please advise? |
| Replies |
The profile you refer to is available at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3145
The profile comes as part of the latest versions of most Adobe applications i.e. Photoshop, CS 2 ETC.
The profile is bases on the FOGRA 27L Characterisation data.
You may also consider the ECI (European Colour Initiative) site http://www.eci.org/eci/en/060_downloads.php
where you will find the following profiles where you will note, they have a profile based on the same FOGRA 27L Characterisation data as well as for other paper types, which you may wish to look at and test:
ISOcoated.icc
Paper type 1 and 2, gloss- and matte-coated, 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA27L
ISOwebcoated.icc
Paper type 3, gloss coated web (LWC), 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA28L
ISOuncoated.icc
Paper type 4, uncoated white, 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA29L
ISOuncoatedyellowish.icc
Paper type 5, uncoated slightly yellowish, 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA30L

Pass 4 Press PDFs of images that include alot of noise creates files to large to email or supply to some publications.
Other than advising designers not to use noisey images in their designs is there a work around?
eg. Full image DPS ad PDF'd using Pass 4 Press created a file of around 15Mb which excedes the publications specifications for suppling Pass 4 Press PDFs.
Thanks in advance!

| Question |
Hi
I am trying to set up Quark 7.0 (mac) to print postscript to run through Acrobat distiller to create Pass4Press PDF. I have followed the Quark 6.5 settings (which worked fine with Quark 6.5), but the Quark 7 postscript files are rejected by Distiller, saying there are no trim or artboxes. Are there Quark 7 settings available for me to check, or am I just doing something wrong? I have noticed that when the page is set up to the document size plus 20mm, the preview in Quark shows a small amount of red to the right hand side, which disappears if you add 3mm to the document width?
Thanks for your help.

When downloading your postscript job option for Quark and unzipping it I am left with a unix executable file and no idea as to what file handler to use. | Question |
Dear pass4press,
I have using Quark 7.0 on AppleMac 10.4.7 and I would be interested in any information you can give to help in the creation of pdfs. I am currently saving as a Quark eps and dropping it into Distiller using the settings you have recommended for Quark 6.5. However, although everything looks fine within Acrobat and Preflight I have had problems when sending these files out to print. The problem seems to be connected with the new transparency feature in Quark 7 although I thought if the eps is flattened within Quark that transparency should not be an issue.
I like to write my pdfs in this way so I can supply both an eps and pdf for printers (none of whom seem to be running Quark 7).
Many thanks.

| Question |
What exactly does Pass4Press mean?
I have a client who was very frustrated after approving our 'final artwork' PDF (which she called 'Pass4Press') to then get a PDF proof from our printer. This is our normal procedure and we would generally thought the printer proof – PDF or Flat-sheet – was the 'Pass4Press' file.
Are we right or is our client?
Can you explain the difference in idiot language for clarity.

We have recently had a problem with brisque PDF2Go and Creo Preps pdfs.

Hi Dan
With Perfect Bound jobs where the cover is glued along the spine and attached to the top and bottom pages of the contents an allowance needs to be made for hinge.
The inside front and back covers as well as the first and last page of the contents can lose an area of around 6mm approx(ask your Printer for guidence).
With perfect bound products there can be a number of other issues, such as the
need where a picture runs across the spine to put in duplicate image in the spine.
You really do need to discuss this with your printer as giving arbitrary figures here would be wrong , your Printer should be able to supply the information.

| Question |
| Forgive me if I have missed this point, but do the pass4proof proofing standards include the specifications for the paper or is it all rolled into compliance of all the swatches in the test target and if so does this include a white (ink free?) swatch? I am a macintosh user, primarily using QuarkXpress for creation on newsletter/magazine pages and adverts for insertion into magazines and newspapers.

| Question |
Are the Pass4Press settings recognised by the Magazines/Publications in Australia and AustralAsia. As QuickCut seems to be the norm over here.
Please can you let me know if it is accepted.
Thanks
Ian |
| Replies |
Hi Ian
The real answer is we have no way of knowing if the Australian establishment you are suppling will accept Pass4press but the below may be of help:
I would have thought you need to talk to the specific printer/publisher you are going to supply in Australia to be certain that what you supply is ok, however
there is an Australian equivalent to Pass4press http://www.3dap.com.au/default.htm which you could consult who
give specific instructions on how to create appropriate PDFs.
As Pass4press is essentailly a PDF/X-1a file which is a regognised worldwide standard you would expect our antipodean cousins to be able to handle it
but like most things in life it is best to check before committing yourself.

| Question |
I'm preparing InDesign documents for Prepress in Europe.
What are the best RGB and CMYK colour settings?
For CMYK should I use:
Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27?
or
Euroscale Coated v2?
What is the difference?
Thanks |
| Replies |
Hi Tom
Without knowing your exact needs and circumstances it is difficult to be
precise so it is not possible to be definitive, you will need to
check that any profile you use produces an acceptable result and is
reproducible when printed.
It is a good idea to check with your printer what he/she advises or if you
are using a Repro House ask their advise.
I would firstly suggest that you find out what paper you are printing on as
this is relevant to the
way you would convert and the profile you may wish to use.
The difference between Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27 and the Euroscale Coated
v2 is that the FOGRA27 profile is based
characterisation data produced from actual print runs using inks that
conform to ISO that are commonly in use in Europe, while "Euroscale" is an
"old" standard which
is no longer generally considered a profile to use.
You may wish to visit http://www.eci.org/eci/en/ where you can find other
ICC profiles based on FOGRA data, which are considered to be appropriate
for many print conditions and are well regarded in the industry, the
profiles may be more appropriate for your needs, below are the profiles
available:
ISOcoated.icc
Paper type 1 and 2, gloss- and matte-coated, 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA27L
ISOwebcoated.icc
Paper type 3, gloss coated web (LWC), 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA28L
ISOuncoated.icc
Paper type 4, uncoated white, 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA29L
ISOuncoatedyellowish.icc
Paper type 5, uncoated slightly yellowish, 150 lpi (60/cm), FOGRA30L

Your proofing standard is based on a visual assessment, use a small media wedge and the quality of the proofs cannot be independently verified as to their accuracy.
FOGRA Certified proofs aren't reliant on visual assessment, use a larger media wedge that can be independently verified and can therefore used as legally binding contract proofs.
Do you intend to adopt FOGRA standards?
And if so, when?

Hi, I am currently planning the production of a new publication and have some general questions which I hope you can help with. Firstly, how do I measure the spine for a perfect bound magazine, and how should this be worked into the design process? (I am using Adobe in design)
Secondly, Do you have or know of any resources which explains the technical aspects in detail of magazine design & prodution? (I have read your printing guide which was invaluable, and also viewed the PPA website for general production tips).
Many thanks for your help

I have just installed your settings manually, and all appears to be OK so please discard my previous email.
I do have another question regarding the distillation of postscript files.
When distilling the file it also creates a JDF file at the same time. Are there any settings to make sure that I only create a PDF as I do not want a JDF file to slip into the batches of PDF's I send to my printer.

| I have downloaded the specs for Quark 6.5 and Distiller 7 to make a PDF/X. Number 6 for Distiller 7 is for Output Intent and the name showing on your example is ISO Web Coated. I don't have that as an option and instead used the Europe standard one. I keep getting a log saying that my pdf is not PDF/X compliant because 'the CMYK and gray scale printing tone values must be color corrected and adjusted for a single characterized printing condition'. Hello,
We are looking to invest in a new digital workflow within our Pre-Press Department. The likely solution will either be Apogee X or Prinergy.
As part of this change we are looking to adopt pass4press settings as a standard for PDF creation. With this is mind I have a few questions:
Are we able to use the pass4press name on our estimates?
Some of our customer still use lower version of Quark such as 4.1 I can't see this on the current standard how should we deal with this?
Will either of the two systems as outlined above be compatibly with the standard?

| BACKGROUND We are a repro/studio in EC1 producing adverts for national and local press. We have been in the repro and studio business for 30+ years, we stem from conventional (Berthold) typesetting, films, Matchprints and drum scanning. PROBLEM Our major client wants to know why we cannot place adverts to certain publications, ie Metro, Daily Express etc. I have explained that they have to use 'Gatekeepers' such as Keene's or Presspoint. Their reply was that some studios are 'Accredited' with the 'pass4press' enabling them to send their artwork direct. What is the solution for us to send our artwork direct to press and avoid the 'Gatekeepers?' |

| Question |
We make Pass4press PDF a/w on a regular basis for magazine advertising.
We have recently changed from system OS9 to OSX.
While we were on OS9 we were using Pass4pressv4, now we have changed over to OSX we are using Pass4pressv5 (all downloaded from the pass4press site).
As a test I produced a pass4press pdf from some existing a/w so I could compare the original a/w to the new a/w (with the new settings). In doing this I have noticed a slight difference. The new PDF created is much warmer in colour than the original. Please can you let me know if this is normal and is due to the new settings of pass4pressv5.
Also, we have recently produced a set of ads that have now been printed and are in magazines. We were slightly disappointed with the result as some of the images look washed out, slightly soft and grainy. It is more evident when our ads are compared to other ads within the magazine which seem to be smoother and have more definition. Is there anything that can be done to rectify these problems? Or does it sound as though something is being missed during the a/w stage?
Thanks you for your help with this.
Kind regards,
Karen. |

The spescification settings you give say for InDesign CS are setout for MACs. Do the same settings work for Windows?

I am worried that Windows uses Truetype fonts and may not be compatible.

If your software creates a valid PDF/X1a file then those files will comply with pass4press as long as they are single pages and they also conform to the resolutions defined by pass4press.

We don't as of yet, but I believe that you can use the Distiller 6 job options in Distiller 7 and they will create a good pass4press file.
All the options which are new in distiller 7 will be set to the default settings which will do no harm.

| Question |
| Downloading pass4press job options automatically sends the options for Acrobat Distiller 6. I currently have Distiller 5. Do you support distiller 5? |
| Replies |
Acrobat Distiller 5 cannot produce PDFX1a files, so cannot produce pass4press version 5 compliant PDFs.
You will need distiller 6 and above to make files that conform directly out of Acrobat Distiller.
IF you have a PDF file that has been created with Acrobat distiller 5, it is possible to make it pass4press compliant with some preflight applications which can preform basic fixes:
"preflight" in Acrobat 7
You can make a PDF/X file using the preflight application and then certify that it is pass4press compliant by checking it to the "Magazine Ads" specification.
Pitstop professional version 5 and above:
Use the "pass4press version 5" profile for Pitstop professional and it will fix your Distiller 5 PDF files to make them conform.
Azura from Onevision
I believe Azura from Onevision is also capable of fixing PDF files made in Acrobat 5 in order to make them conform to pass4press version 5 although I am not sure of the details.
Hope this helps...

Postscript is notorius for very large file sizes.
7 MB sounds about right for a print-quality 4-page document in PDF.

| Question |
| I create multipage pdfs from Quark 6 that comply with pass4press standard, I then use acrobat 7 to extract the individual pages (our printer will only accept single pages) The problem is that when acrobat saves the file back down it creates a pdf version later than 1.3 and thus fails preflight. Is this an issue that can be ignored or is there a work around. I can't see a setting in preferences that may produce a 1.3 file |

Acrobat 7 does not give options when extracting pages. However, you can use the preflight tool to make the file compliant again. You can create a droplet or a hot folder to automate this if you wish.

Where can I find an acredited proof4press supplier?
I have been asked to provide a contract proof with the pass4press PDF file and I need to find a supplier to create these proofs. Does a digital chromalin suffice as a 'contract proof'?
Please can you send me more information regarding the proofs that will be accepted by publications.

A properly made cromalin will conform to proof4press.
Just to clarify, Suppliers are not accredited, devices are accredited..
Click on the following link to see accredited devices.

Anyone who can make one of these proofs, and has the necessary verifier software/hardware can make a 'certified' proof4press proof.

| A digital cromalin does suffice as a contract proof. You need to check the publisher's specification but a proof4press accreditated cromalin would be using the curve DPeuro_offset_DP10. A full list of proofing devices that have been accreditated under this scheme can be found on this website in the proof4press section. As far as which suppliers can supply acredited proofs, most of the major prepress suppliers will be able to produce one or more of the accredited proofs. |
| Question |
I have tried using your pdf job settings in Acrobat Distiller version 7.0 - however, the file that I'm trying to distill keeps being flushed. I can distill it using different job options - is this a compatability issue as you do say your job options are for Distiller 6.0, or is there a fault in the file?
Also, when I want to preflight my pdf using your online software, the publication I am sending to isn't listed your publications, please advise.

The settings you are using are for distiller 6, but should work in 7 although they haven't been tested...
If the job is flushing there it's probably something else that's wrong.. It may have to do with PDF/X compatibility, will the file ditsill to the PDF/X1a preset that ships with distiller7 ?
If you attach the details from the log from distiller we might be able to help out a bit more..

| Question |
This is a query regarding proofing specs.
In your pic4press document you advise the use of the ISO Web Coated profile. Does this also mean that where a proof4press pdf is required then an ISO matched proof would be preferable to a Eurostandard Match.
I would appreciate your view on this as it seems to me as this would be best. Do the printers that are on the committee print ISO or Eurostandard.
Thank you in advance.
Ian Nunn |
| Replies |
Ian,
I have asked the question to some of the printers involved in the pass4press committee..
Hope to have an answer from them for you soon,
but in the interim the general consensus is that most printers print to proof4press specification which has accredited devices from vendors including Creo, Agfa, Dupont and a few others.. see the proof4press section on this website.
The proof4press specificatin is set to ISO 12647-2 but not necessarely the characterizations created by FOGRA, nor the the profiles created by the ECI.
Also proof4press is for proofing and not for supplying pdf files so I'm not sure what you mean by a proof4press PDF, but if you mean the output intent identifier, the only correct answer to that question is that the output identifier should match the condition the file was created for.
pic4press specifies to use ECI's ISO web coated profile in the absence of better information from your printer or publisher. The reason we suggested this profile is that it is reasonable and has the correct TAC. If you are involved in VERY high quality work it is unlikely that you will use this profile all the time for converting as it has a very full and long black which is not suitable for certain types of content.
Let's also be clear that there are several similar "standards" out there with the same name.. Eurostandard, Euroscale and EuroOffset... None of these are the same thing, some are propriatary intelectual property of vendors while some of them are obsolete prinitng specs..
I know this is a bit of a long answer, but there is no easy answer to these questions..

| I've noticed a few people are asking the same question I am and still you do not seem to understand what they are saying, In your pdf file explaining pass4press settings to create a Quark postscript file on page 11 item 7 you say these settings are available pre-configured from www.pass4press.com. well they are not because no-one seems to be able to find them. This would save having to manually enter all the settings. |
| Replies |
It does indeed state that a settings file can be downloaded, but I can't find it either. I shall try to get someone to make it available as soon as possible.
In the meantime, follow the instructions in the brochure, and save the settings within your system.
The item you refer to (page 11 item 7), are instructions for Acrobat Distiller, not Quark. The instructions for creating a postscript file from Quark are on page 10.

Hi,
You've probably noticed that we've redesigned the website recently. We are currently having trouble posting downloadable settings from the website, it is not an oversight on our part. Until then the best we can offer is a pdf describing how to create your own.
As soon as we have the issues resolved we will get all the settings up on the website, including the preflighting stuff.
In the interim I will ask Enfocus to post all the stuff on the www.certifiedpdf.net website.

Started making pdf's in distiller on the PDF/X-1a setting works fine.
BUT the printer we supply pdfs to require pdfs without crop marks but with a 3mm bleed. Taken th crop marks off in quark 6.5 and made a postscript file open distiller and the pdf fails with this error message CAN YOU HELP???
<PDFX ISO= |
| Replies |
Why would the printer reject files with crop marks? I don't understand the logic..
If your printer doesn't want crop marks on files then this is outside the boundries of pass4press.
none the less, I have never seen this message and it doesn't make any sense to me, but i will ask around and see if anyone can shine some light on it... |
I've asked the question to the powers that be at Adobe and this is the response I recieved, (see bellow) Can you clarify exactly what you are doind and at what stage you get the error.
This is what I believe you are saying:
1. Create PS file fro Quark, with no crop marks... using the Adobe Acrobat PPDF (which one? need to know)
2. Distill with Distiller 6.01 or 7.0 ? (need to know which version)
3. Distiller spurts out error (are you sure you copied in the whole error, it seems truncated?)
IF you can answer the above questions I will look into it further.
Hi Andy!
Where is the "error message" coming from, the Distiller?
Or does it come from the bundled (with QuarkXPress 6.x) Jaws
interpreter?
If the Distiller, it would be indicative of improperly generated
PostScript from QuarkXPress. If from Jaws, who knows! If from
Acrobat itself, then a problem in the PDF generated by either
Distiller or Jaws.
More info is needed before I could give a rational answer.
|
The PDF/X-1a standard specifies crop marks. Without these the file will fail and be rejected. To create a file without crop-marks, you must switch off PDF/x-1a standard compliancy.
However... the PDF produced will be neither pass4press (version 5) compliant or PDF/X-1a compliant.
Beats me why a printer would want a file without crop marks. I guess it must be a fraction of a page.

Hi,
Can I still create pass for press files from quark 5 running on classic from OS 10.2.8 using Acrobat 5 and Distiller 5?
If so, how?
Thanks
|
| Replies |
In response to your question..
You can use Quark 5 on OS9 to create a good Postscript file, but unfortunately Distiller 5 will not create a PDF file that fully conforms with pass4press.
You can make a PDF/X file using the preflight application and then certify that it is pass4press compliant by checking it to the "Magazine Ads" specification
Pitstop professional version 5 and above:
Use the "pass4press version 5" profile for Pitstop professional and it will fix your Distiller 5 PDF files to make them conform.

I believe Azura from Onevision is also capable of fixing PDF files made in Acrobat 5 in order to make them conform to pass4press version 5 although I am not sure of the details.
Hope this helps...
